The shoes in this poem marked a turning point for my daughter, then aged four. She discovered a life long love of shoes - she's now grown up and still has more pairs than anyone I know.
These shoes are party shoes. Once they were shiny, white and new. Now, though still white, still with their shine; Having been worn time after time, The toes are just a little scratched - Both the same, so they still match.
But Marianne's growing, She's getting quite tall. Soon they won't fit her feet at all, Then she'll have some new shoes With a new sort of shine And she'll wear them at parties To make her look fine.
:) Having two girls of my own, this piece made me smile, Susan! My biggest bitch about our myriad pairs of shoes is never being able to find one or the other, especially right before school! I like the simplistic cadence and matter of factness of this piece, it rings lovingly, yet seems to have a tiny sigh embedded within its parental evocation.

Isn't it funny what we remember of our children's childhood? I remember my daughter for her lack of female virtues, he tomboyishness, her loathing of wearing anything that smacked of dresses or frilly blouses.
Now this thirty something matron wears a size 0 and when pregnant, wears a huge size 3! She is so feminine that its scary! How time changes us all...
The familiar lament of dual-career parents raising children is, "I just can't do it all." The Libra Solution provides an alternative - a more satisfying and sustainable work and life approach - to the overwrought modern day norm.
