Yes, Karla it is a sad thing and must be stopped. How can parents and elders be so cruel is some thing really hard to understand.

Again, you tackle the reality of one person's barbarism against another in the most poignant and deeply penetrating way - talking of the feelings, rather than the act. I salute you, Karla. Who can know the reasoning behind this male-pleasing mutilation - but what speaks "worse" is the tolerance and acceptance of the women in such cultures that allow it. Emancipation is not only a relatively modern concept, but a relativly narrow and priviliged one. Globalisation is sadly only commercial and not social. This makes me weep - "thank you" seems not the right thing to say in such circumstances, but bless you as always for your forthright write. Kate xx

I don't know why they do this and this was brought out in the program Strong Medicine. Horrible and as a woman I deplore this done to anyone.
