This is an ugly poem, but one that must be written. If one life is saved through my words, it will have been worth it. I can't promise, but I'm going to try to quit smoking. Keep me (and Karen) in your prayers...
Death came in pretty packaging: a gift of deceipt designed to conceal the danger camouflaged within.
Skeletal fingers deliver his special presents, hoping the stupid will fall for the game he has planned.
Unaware a shark lies in wait, I answer the door and invite Death in for coffee; he gives me a smoke ...
Gullible creature that I am, I follow his lead, but choose the path my lungs are on ... (man, this shit is gooood),
A habit waits to get stronger while I grow weaker. With each cigarette that I light, the suffering grows ...
Over the years, breath is something I've learned to value; it is a rare commodity, difficult to find.
My stress reliever will be the nail in the menthol coffin that's stained with Nicotine ... one puff at a time.
I pray that I am not too late to quit smoking now .....
Hi Karla--Good luck lady- YOU can do it! and You will cuz, you don't want smelly breath- smelly clothes-smelly hair- the look of women with a cigerrete hanging from sweet or otherwise lips, is NOT becoming- it's gross- it's disgusting and I'm glad I quit over 20 yrs ago, when I was pregnant with my 1st- Then tried again and was sick to my stomach w/ nauseau and said to myself"Self, it's not worth feeling sick and headaches and I quit and this time for GOOD" Not sorry either... You can do so much and save Good $$$ for pleasurable things, as you know- Your in my prayers Lady K--- Find the strength within and a purpose/reason- even if a longer more meaningful life/kids-etc. YOu will succeed cuz, your reaching out...Great poem and to the point- I like how you turn this Negative issues in our life into something P O S i T i V E! I aim to keep thoughts in others in Positive light also- It's important and needed~!WArm HuGs2U-Love,Sheee
You are not too late sweets. I don't smoke as much as I used to these days, but hopefully I find the strength to completely quit one day. Though a social smoker I could finish a whole packet in a night - terrible habit indeed!
Good luck and God bless, Karla!
Sandie.

Karla, for far too many years, it was deemed in order to be considered “cool,” one must light up. Our generation literally had cigarettes crammed down our throats, and it was ingrained in our very fabric of living day-to-day in modern society. Unfortunately, we do know that the dangers of lighting up, (as well as the cigarette manufactures who lied directly to Congress and the general public), can really have long-lasting detrimental affects on ones health. It seems like everything we touch today will end up killing us for one reason or another. The poetry itself was another fine example of just how marvelous of a Poet you truly are. I do wish you the very best of luck in your cognizant effort to quit smoking as well as for Karen also. Always remember my precious friend, “you can do it!” Take good care and be well.
just do it, and think of the money you will save. i know it won't be easy, but remember....you CAN do it, and you have many people who will be praying and pulling for you (me, most of all!!)! all the best to you, dear twin!!
(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin, karen lynn. :)
I love your poem and I wish you good luck
in kicking the habit. The last time I quit,
it was for four years. Now I´m back at it
but I know I should stop again.
I´m going to post a humorous little quatrain
I wrote called "Addiction" and I hope you enjoy it.
Karla I'll share a sucess story with you...
I smoked since I was thirteen, the last going off I was up to two large packs a day of Canadian cigarettes. If I was drinking sometimes more. IN past I had tried every thing else and always went back to them 5 years ago I went on Cyban and I haven't touched a cigarette since and even managed a severe crisis of having to pull the plug on my brother when he took sick. So I know you can do it and I am cheering for yo.
It is never too late to think about your health and the benefits that will come from quitting smoking. My Dad quit four years ago, but only after having a toe and a half amputated, due to the constricted blood vessels in his legs. He had smoked for 40 years and quit cold turkey. I guess in his case, looking at a foot with three and a half toes, when the realization was there that he could have lost more was enough motivation. You'll never regret the decision to quit.
Good luck!
Hugs and Love,
Jill
Karla I too stopped in the 80's Jerry is tight you must WANT tothen yu will do all in your power, no 2nd guessing. I couldn't have done it without constant prayer, but most of all belief that the prayer would do it, and it did!I kept a carton of cigarets in my freezer.
Sounds crazy I know but I knew they were there and I could make it without them. This is a fabulous write on the subject, just keep in mind that you have the power to do it, if you can write like this!
I'll keep you in prayer!
Karla, I will you strength to fight the demon nicotine, as I struggle with this myself. Perhaps with our combined will and the help of supreme powers we will have victory! Great strength and insight in these words.
Best wishes, I quit back in the late 80s - only to restart in the mid 90s... for me, it reminds me of an old WC Fields quote about smoking, "Quitting is easy, I've done it hundreds of times."
It is truly a pretty packaging, but worse still is the silent craving, I too know this feeling. I wish you strength and willpower to quit, it is tough but not unbeatable. An excellent write Karla.
warm hugs and love

You are not too late. My wife and I quit smoking AND drinking about nine years ago. I have no doubt that it is adding years to my life. The thing is, Karen, you must want to quit, really have that as your priority, and not try quitting just because you think you should, you MUST want to, or you will fail. Quiting smoking was very easy for me AND my wife because we WANTED to. I would say good luck to you, but you don't need luck. If you want to quit, you will. Otherwise, you won't. Simple. Yes, it is that simple.
Good luck and God bless, Karla!
Sandie.
This too is my demon...one I intend to challenge one day, on a grand wide scale.
You will be in my prayers...and remember...You CAN do it!
