Ears standing at full attention; large, expressive, unblinking eyes locked on target; nose twitching with every new smell its prey scratches into the air; whiskers trembling in anticipation, the long haired, tortiseshell-colored Maine coon kitten watches its quarry across the room. Trained in the art of blending in with its surroundings, the kitten has mastered invisibility; the mouse is unaware that it is being observed. Only when death silently approaches, on four paws well-aquainted with the blood of its enemies, does the mouse realize that it is the loser at the game of war.
That kitty could probably teach mine a thing or two - not that long ago I found a tiny mouse huddled on one of our stairs - and five of my cats were lounging around at the bottom of those stairs, and they hadn't even seen him!
While I liked the fact that there are no typographic errors or syntax errors in this post. But that central metaphor of concatenating WAR to CAT-and-MOUSE food chain is not well placed. War is fought between two enemies who are at even terms, at similar planes. For example World War 1 or World War 2. People even CALL gulf war a WAR but it is UN PEACEKEEPING MISSION. Some experts say it is AMERICAN MILITARY EXERCISE, like HITLER did in BASQUES on which Picasso painted "GUERNICA". Stealth fighters with laser guided bombs (which have great accuracies) POUNDED BABY food factories, of course who cares they were terrorists. Probably those BABIES who survived will learn counting by counting the number of bullets and bombshells that blast in front of them.
Gonna have to report that cat to the society for the prevention of the killing of mice...for shame beautiful little kitty, you have plenty of non-alive food...;) Ed
reading this as one of my dogs has just gotten a rude awakening being hissed into submission by the kitty-tiger who rules the pet kingdom in my house. wonderful detail and description. Dawn
It's a little thing we call the "food chain" and I'm glad I'm at the top of the food chain. And the cat's pretty lucky too, having nine lives. A different game of war, Karla. Nice camouflage and nicely done! You are well-trained in the game of writing wars!
