... Calm. Collected. Cool as a rock on the exterior. Look underneath: a storm seething. He does not want to show any emotion of how the war affects him: the rage thunders as his buddies die one by one. Lightning rips another hole in his soul as he hears a mother mourning the loss of a child. Tears build behind a dam threatening to burst its banks. He. Must. Not. Break. He tucks it deep inside, but will remember when -- if -- he makes it home. The storm inside the calm.
A very deep write my friend, one that describes the lives of many whom have been and continue to be affected by the war...very touching write...about a very realistic but dangerous thing to keep such a multitude of feelings within...better to let go! You've penned it well captured some true emotions here!
Blessings,
Joyce B.
I like the way you presented and offered this one with a reality feel to it that made the reader hope to hear the conclusion as well.

Karla --
I'm so glad I'm able to get back in the groove and read in time for this one. You pack pounds of emotion and stark reality into this 3 minute poem. So many of those storms inside the calm finally explode. Not always I know - but sometimes our survivors are ruined forever.
Real show of emotions here. This is what we can expect, Karla, until mankind reaches the understanding that war is not needed if only for the lives it has cost. Great write!!
A sad reality of war and its heart rendering effects.. It shatters the soul, and lives of so many. He remembers as he fights on and on. Great write!......M
Karla, I can so relate to this poem...my son was in Iraq and all that kept me sane was my prayers. From what he says, "Its pure hell over there and it's a sad situation for our American Men & Women to be faced with. This truly touched my soul!
One of your very best dear Karla. You have captured so much in so little. A sobering reality that has been going on since man first picked up sticks. Blessings to you Poet ...

I've sadly seen far too many like him, and I've been there a few times when that raging storm has erupted - it's not a pleasant sight.
War truly is Hell, and anyone who has experienced it must be given all due respect, admiration, and compassionate understanding.
Mushroom Cloud, a fact-based historical novel, is the first book of The First Strike Trilogy: USA and the Soviet Union are building nuclear arms for a face off in a potential nuclear war in the late 1950's and early 1960's.
