my private nightmare *FICTION*

in the darkness of the night
i wake up screamin'
cryin' out
because of what happened
so long ago--

i don't remember his name
he was only eighteen
far too young
thrown into a man's war
far, far too young--

he came to my hospital
qui nhon, vietnam
scared, worried
i cut his clothes off him
where's the damn wound--

there isn't a mark on him
looks perfectly fine
must be hurt
or he wouldn't be here
what's goin' on--

says, "am i going to die?"
in his eyes, there's fear
i tell him,
"no, you're not gonna die"
i PROMISED him--

there's other patients to treat
he doesn't look bad
looks okay
i tell him, "i'll be back"
and i leave him--

i'm runnin' here, runnin' there
so many wounded
we win some
more often not, lose some
hate this damn war--

there's blood all over my clothes
mixed with sweat and tears
can't wash up
there's way too much to do
why won't it STOP--

finally it settles down
looks like it's over
"NURSE--come quick
somethin's wrong with this guy"
ohGod the boy--

his abdomen is swellin'
internal bleeding
he's dyin'
get a surgeon here STAT
we gotta MOVE--

he looks at me with terror
his words pierce my heart
"YOU PROMISED--
YOU SAID I WOULDN'T DIE"
he breathes his last--

that's what i have had to live with
all of these long years
i see him
and remember it all
it eats me up--
-----------------------------------------------------------
dedicated with grateful thanks and all
my respect to all military nurses, who
served their nation proudly despite
the horrors of war...

without their bravery and knowledge,
many more of our troops would not
have made it back home...

i honor your courage and dedication.

(((HUGS))) and love,

karla. :(

*THANK YOU*

The elements of truth are here . . . Many a nurse or doctor has 'lost one' whom they thought would live and vise versa.
We all have 'private nightmares'. Thanks for sharing yours.

While in Nam I learned early on, tell them what they wanted to hear,"You're going to be just fine", anything to calm their fear, but to NEVER,EVER promise them that they would make it. Those few that I did, still haunt me, can't shake them.

My Mother is a nurse and my good friend's wife is a WWII military nurse. Without nurses, hospitals would not run nearly as smoothly as they do, especially in war time.
Thanks for this poem, Karla.
