Poem for Remembrance Sunday 2020

A century now, the cenotaph
has stood proud in Whitehall,
and every year we acknowledge
those who gave their all.

So many wives and mothers
left bereft and shedding tears,
so many fatherless children,
so many desolate years.

Seems one war spawned another
and more were sent to die,
We remember them with sorrow
yet ask the question - why?

To die for King and country
was a well respected thing,
yet to the families left behind,
it lessened not loss' sting.

Each year there are less marching,
remembering comrades lost,
their generation's passing
cannot nullify the cost.

So still, we will remember,
on each Remembrance Day,
the souls of those who ne'er came back
to keep evil at bay.
