In 2000, I wrote this poem about/to Dame Vera Lynn. It was published in my book "Twilight". Sadly dame Vera is no longer with us but her beautiful voice and songs live on.

She sang “There’ll always be an England”
with voice so clear and true ,
known as “The Forces Sweetheart”
to the likes of me and you.
Tears in their eyes, men far away
listened to her voice so clear,
and thought they of another place,
in their hearts held, very dear.
And in that place, their families,
loved ones, children, wives -
it was for them they fought this war,
prepared to give their lives.
To these men, our Vera went to sing,
brought joy and smiles to all,
her message of camaraderie
and that Brittania, she did rule.
Though years have passed
her name still brings
the memories to mind,
and when we hear her beautiful voice,
the war’s so far behind.
Dame Vera Lynn, we love you,
for all the songs you sang,
the places that you travelled
to support our English men.
And we hope you have fond memories
that are often brought to mind,
for in English towns and villages,
your fans, you still will find.
