Have you ever run through
The Virginia woods at night,
Feel the spirits of the men
Who’ve given their lives in
The name of freedom?
Have you ever caught the
Scent of gunpowder which
Still lingers upon the winds,
Or the eerie yell of a
Rebel as he goes into battle?
The land remembers the times
Of bloodshed, it carries with it
The souls of those brought
Down in the heat of battle.
Their battle songs and battle drums
Still echo through these woods,
And their memories are buried in
The silt of the riverbed just
Past the house.

Soldiers on both sides were fighting for freedom. The north for the freedom of the slaves and the south for the freedom to keep slaves. I have to agree with the north but appreciate the bind the south was in. It's easy presently to put the past in perspective like this but seeing a human being with thoughts and feelings put up for auction would be too much for me to bear. I would have to stand up and fight for the freedom of anyone being sold as a slave even if it meant my death.
I've read and heard of some errie happenings there. Strange happenings that make you realize that there are soooo many things that happen, that science cannot explain! Nice poem, Laura.
A work in American history and existentialism Which is an Invitation to connect and create the dots in your life to other revolutions like the Cuban Revolution.
