When I feel depressed, I try to count my blessings. I have a unique way of doing this, and by the time I get finished I feel so very blessed.

When I find myself asking these questions..

What is there left to live for?
What reason is there to go on?
What have I got to look forward to?
Why bother to get up in the morning?

I close my eyes and imagine that I am alone in a field,
I am standing beneath a tree,
The grass is tall and swaying in the wind,
The day is warm, the sun bright,
My stomach rumbles because I am hungry,

At this point  I ask myself, what blessings do I have?

I am healthy although stripped of everything,
The day is warm and I have clothes to wear,
I am standing beneath a tree that provides shade,
Which could mean a certain amount of shelter.

Now I start to get creative.

As a healthy person I can find food,
The tree will provide shade and protection from rain,
I seem to be in no immediate danger,
My shoes will protect my feet when I walk.

I am ready to count the blessings that I do have.

I have a house, no matter how humble,
I have food in my kitchen, no matter how little,
I have clothes, no matter how outdated
I have several pairs of shoes to wear.
I have a car, although not the newest,
I own my little treasures, although not priceless,
I have utilities that make my life easier,
I have an income, although small.

About this time I am looking around thinking "Wow! I am rich!"
I have so much more than a lot of people. However, I have even more.
I put myself back in the field beneath the tree.

It is raining, the branches and leaves shelter me,
My family are with me, and I feel warm and loved.
And I realize that family, and friends are the joy of  my life,
I know, that regardless of what material possessions I own,
These people offer me unconditional love,
And they care when I am ill or depressed,
They eagerly share both my joys and woes.

Finally I can open my eyes, my heart is filled with appreciation,
I humbly thank my creator for all the things that he has blessed me with.

Enjoyed this very much...I feel like I already know you, I am from Manchester Kentucky....a neighboring county of Laurel (London) and have read some of the articles mentioned in your bio. Enjoyed your poem I too have to stop and count my blessings sometimes when I get discouraged or a bit depressed. Great reminder and very inspiring...will be glad to come back and visit your den again...enjoyed it.
Blessings and Merry Christmas,
Joyce Bowling

"Try" to count your blessings? It seems you "do" count them: all the best and they are many. Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone took the time?

Janet, it only I could have developed this outlook on life in my early years, I would have eliminated much of the agony of living and turned my life into a beautiful life. But I did not and could not at that time, and suffered much because of my attitude toward people and things. Very constructive presentation dear. Learned a lot and gained a lot. Thank you Janet.
