I walked along the forest path,
In awe looked up to see,
Much life the canopy it has,
A thought then came to me,
An oak that stood there strong and tall,
In storms gave shelter, to my pooch and me,
Come nearer it did call, let’s talk,
I wanted to be real close, to fully hear,
I put my arms around its trunk, and very close my ear,
And sure enough, profound its words it spoke to me,
I am a child of mother earth; my roots in her are deep,
But yet, I can the heavens see,
Yes I said you’re beautiful and tall,
And green until the fall,
Yes and proud you stand for all to see,
No more proud your Mom could be,
Fondly now he spoke of her,
And how he promised her to care,
For all her other children too,
So I listened, wouldn’t you?
Then a bird I heard its song so sweet,
It’s song and colours were a treat,
Yes of them too, I take care said he,
And guess what else I do?
I shade you from the heat,
Give fresh air, make life replete,
A canopy of green,
For the birds to sit and preen,
To build their nests,
And many other critters too,
But, that’s not all I do my friend,
Give you heat and shelter in the end,
Now my friend it said, tell me true ,
What is it that you do?
Ahem, I rasped sort of still in awe,
I build, and cut, and saw,
Use things and make things,
That’s very nice young fellow, I can see,
What I meant, what do you do for me,
It’s not that I don’t like your hug,
But what do you do to enhance life,
Yours and mine and the little bug,
I heard you give them all some sort of strife,
What do you do for Mother Earth?
The one that gave us birth,
You still? It’s hard for me to say,
Build crosses to this day?

The serious critical message is well handled in a gentle alluring tale of quiet intimacy. I like the style here and the flow of the lines in rhyme.
