Waves of Grain

This ocean of grass,

This ocean of prairie,

The wind blows this sea

of endless miles

These wheat fields,

with waves of grain

This ocean of earth,

These green and brown

sand blown clouds,

These golden seeds

An awful storm came up,

The wind fierce and strong,

The sky black and green

turned this tranquil sea

into a turbulent fright,

pounding rain and hail,

washing away,

scattering the golden seeds

 This ocean of earth

turned its back on us,

on our endless needs

This ocean of grass,

This ocean of prairie,

older than man

The creatures of long ago

were meant to roam

A man couldn’t see

any farther than the horizon

of golden waves

This ocean of prairie,

moved in mysterious ways

at the mercy of God’s Hand
