(Lost Journeys)

These desert mountains

laid in slate and granite

crumble into sand

layer by layer

telling tales of lost journeys

of faraway explosions

super novas in the sand

it formed these plains,

this cactus and sage brush

It happened long ago

Who walked this ancient way

when it was green and fertile

and tundra was velvet

when glaciers moved

Now only hazy blue skies

and brown sand

sage brush and pinon trees

and a hot breeze

She takes your breath

to make a sea

and water fell

came and went

leaving this canyon

dry and barren
