Rocking Universe

we strode onto the sidewalks
wasted along the avenue
we stood in line
swaying in the heat
to find the rockers void

I tell you man
they was wasted

they wore spandex
they was wasted in neon
their eyes were open wide
rocking the wild ones
we sneered and grinned

I tell you man
they were animals

they howled on the stage
rolling into concert halls
arenas of mass confusion
a cloud of smoke arose
smelled like mary jane

I tell you man
our ears were ringing

the electric guitars screaming
the singer crying
feel me, hear me
swinging his microphone
he was dangerous, man

I tell you man
the beat was grand

the drummer was fabulous
rocking the wasted
to a primitive beat
the bass following
the line is infinite

I tell you man
they spoke in poetic rhetoric

a hip beat
dancing into dream land
you could feel your heart
pounding out a rhythm
it was awesome, man

we strutted like rock stars
slurring our words
we were wasted,
wasted in rocking oblivion
we stumbled into the night

I tell you man
they howled like wild ones

now the old ones
don't think straight
mumbling their lines
smelling of booze & dope
snorting white gold

it was in the poppy fields
where china white burned them
burning brain cells
nodding like psychos
they sure were cool, once

now with burned up brain cells
and blood boiling
they die young but they're old
inside their polluted souls
rocking the universe

I tell you man
they was wasted

This is a very powerful mesage.
you were taking me on a trip down memory lane and then bam! smack me in the face with the truth of drugs and booze.
Thanks Dale.
great poem to take to school kids starting at grade one and all the way through.

Must be my age, but I am in a bit of retro-phase at the moment: a "clean one" I hasten to add! And, blimey, some music has just come on that I thought was on this page - head-banging stuff called "Obsession" from my daughter's Ipod! But this made me think The Who and Tommy and all that...whatever; so true: it's all very well to minimise and romanticise, but perhaps we "Flower People" of San Francisco in the 70's have come off lightly compared to the very heavy scenes that some of our kids are experiencing these days, with the added pressures... but maybe this is specific high-pressure UK angst talking. This speaks in a way that only CJ Clark can so cinematically elucidate. TY Kate xx

You write amazing visuals. This write is like a white line. It snorts up clean and you follow the trail from beginning to sorry end. We've all seen too many people fry and die young on powder and now crack...
