A sequel to the Desert Hermit, well...it's a work in
process always open to change. I think
The Coyote was a Trickster
The professor was tired, glad to be home
He brewed a pot of tea, set out a small plate
of sandwiches he had made earlier that day
His dog, Jack, was barking, growling at something
outside, he guessed, suddenly a knock at the door
The coyote had followed him home,
at the door transformed into a man
He was a shape shifter
He felt the old man alone, except for the dog
Old prof answered the door a crack
Jack was raising hell, his hackles raised
He growled at the stranger
What can I do for you, old prof asked
The coyote said I'm looking for some work
to which the professor answered he had none
and then the man pushed his way in
Suddenly a pickup drove up the drive
It was the elder medicine man
He had felt the old prof had needed company
but now he sensed the evil within
threatening the old prof
He pulled out something from his medicine bag
sprinkling it all about, he chanted a blessing
He approached the door and he knocked loudly
calling out he entered and the coyote was startled
Jack wagged his tail and licked the elders hand
The professor told the elder that this man entered
his home without invitation, the coyote grinned
sheepishly he wandered out the door
The elder told old prof he wished to perform a
Blessing Way for him to rid the evil spirits
to return them from where they came
Goodness me, this is potent stuff here, Dale... I know perhaps that I am bit lax and fuzzy round the edges when it comes to form, but I rather think this might suit a prose style... Go, on, give it a go! Prose is, after all, the American tradition and yet I am an English enthusiast of its form and use it liberally. But this is highly suitable, I would have thought. You could take the central idea and circle round it, if you wanted to be strict about it... Sorry to be bossy... But I reckon you could be onto a winner here... We want more! :))
The drug called "The Shari" has been used for vision quests over many years. But, when all the rivers start drying up, the tribe must send a young hunter named Tomás on a much more important trip through the Amazon.
