the old man said "Boys gotta be boys"
so we knew that all was well
no matter what kinda hell
we raised... a "Billy"
the old man said "Goats are many"
we knew then the herder was us
as the coyotes waited in the shadows
the old man said "Coyotes are sneaky"
we knew it was a fact
you could hear it in their singing
our dogs would howl back
speaking out "Tread Lightly"
the old man said "Boys, travel the hills"
we knew that one horizon
lead us to another in our journey
so we raised... a "Billy"
we weren't afraid of anything
the old man said "Brave Lads, go forward"
so we knew we would continue
as time dealt her hand
we moved with the wind
sometimes breezing along
often times blown into the fire
the old man said "Men will survive"
so we thought when were we such
we thought we knew so much
we didn't know if life was hard or easy
we came to a cross road
which way to go
the old man said "Boys, go with your heart"
in such a way we became brothers
riding the hard ride, cruising the easy
we didn't know any other way
the old man said "Boys, you rode the hard
and cruised the easy, now you're men"
so we raised ...a "Billy
and he was pleased
Love the spirit of lore and continuity in this write, Dale, all wrapped in the intergenerational culture and community. A sense of awe, respect and timelessness which gives a personal face to our sorroundings and beds us in, knowing how and where we belong. And why. This weaves a gentle mystery that is both concrete and abstract, justly proud and humble. Somehow links my mind with the indigenous Native Americans as well as the Western ones. You tell tales oh so well. If you did cinema, your opening sequences would always involve a narrated voice-over, setting the scene. Love this. TY Kate xx
This is a good one. It reminded me of my nomadic culture and lifesty;e, where verbal communication is the way of teaching young people specially boys. The old men were a source of wisdom, knowledge and guidance. But here in America, that is no more. The old man's role was taken by the TV!
