Midnight Train to Cheyenne

a train whistles at every crossing
a dream for every soul
floating from car to car
every dreamer, a shadow
dreaming their own dream
visionaries dreaming of truth
envisioning illusory remembrances
never understanding
upon awakening

midnight train to cheyenne
sharing the ride with dreamers
stretching along the track
long and winding path
over rolling hills and plains
under the open sky
around arroyos and bluffs
white chalked buttes
puffed up silhouettes
in starlit cabins, tepee forms
cottonwoods line dried river beds
painted horizons
stretching to eternity

midnight train to cheyenne
ancient ghosts moving
from car to car
opening doors to cross
entering fertile portals
where souls gather
every dreamer a lost soul
all ancient shadows
lingering, dreaming

midnight train to cheyenne
laughing, mumbling, uttering
revelations tumbling
dreamers sleeping in corners
ancient ghosts haunt them
an owl hoots prophecies
riders cross the sage
mountain lions hide
upon pale rocks
dreamers ride the train
all ancient shadows

never getting to Cheyenne

The moment I saw the title on the main page I thought that has to be written by our Dale Clark. Great poem friend.
