a half century
50 years of garbage
and now I’ll turn one
in February
just a babe
in an adults world
clothed in another time
naked now in diapers
needing changed
and I passed the neon
sign that read
Liquor Ahead
a quarter century
smoked filled bars
brawls in alleyways
fisticuffs thrown down
blackened eyes bruised
by knuckles bared
drunken stupor
amidst vomiting anger
we lie there dry heaving
I inhaled and sighed
the horror
as I passed by a junk yard
filled with wrecked lives
classic cars for sale
with turned down buttoned up
lips smooches
on lip stick stained windshields
now bug streaked
and broken husks with cracks
a dime a dozen
hallways of haunted
high school homecomings
hollowed eyes smiling
stared down the aisles of time
marching in bands now silent
without a majorette
or mascot or pom pom girls
or cheerleaders
of jocks
in booby socks
a hell of a long time ago
or only yesterday
doesn’t matter to a babe
turning one
so long half century
of loss and tumultuous tiltings
of the tilt a whirl
or Ferris wheel
spinning away like an axis
on galaxies gone mad
hit by meteors from hell
like a comet tail
merely a million years
in Toto
