Late Shadows

afternoon shadows crawled,
skirting across the landscape
clouds changed the light
the colors were bright
then in the woods
came a darkness

death peered momentarily
just an instance
just a brief thought
crossed my mind; -mortality

I was far from that day
lying in the hospital bed
feeling that presence
stalking me
the light outside was gray
that moment, that winters’ day

now summer shined
on ponderosa pines
across mountain slopes
sunlight and clouds
the blue sky turned amber
creating late shadows

the shadows moved again
across the flowing meadow
tundra and evergreen grass
not a soul in sight
feeling so small; insignificant
like time had gone
leaving me in limbo
silent and alone with death
