Mutton Chops

mutton chops and leather
the King is back in rhinestone cape
like a sneering snarling whimper
in Neon Vegas Lights
driving a pink Cadillac
and his double on a Harley bike
cruising to Mexico in Cardiac
arrest like Bizarro Fright
needing to pep up his act
another chick flick
shaking pelvic cataract
in Velvet Satin Pajamas
needing sweet adulation
like another comeback
his double needing sedation
in Viva Los Amorous
cruising down sunset & Vine
Hollywood Boulevard
wishing for an Academy
award like Jimmy Dean
flamed out in his Corvette
dreaming of shooting stars
glorious exit in sunset
riding off the Scene
sneering snarling pelvic
dance of coolness
hair wavy and slick
Pompadour and mutton chops
the King will live forever
in rhinestone cape & leather
donning haute’couture’
succeeding to the Mop Tops
doubling back to Vegas
no longer the King
just a country boy from Memphis
the Mutton Chop Elvis
the once and only golden boy
Hell, it coulda been Jerry Lee
or maybe just a decoy
Rock & Roll metamorphous
from mutton chops
to rolling stones & fab four
a veritable kaleidoscope
dating back to Memphis
The Kings of Rock & Roll
sneer & snarl & whimper
fame takes its toll
Big E shall demure
no king fly’s a rhinestone cape
or flaps pink caddie wings
more than happy to escape
mutton chops & leather

Dale, I loved this descriptive work on Elvis. I have a portrait of him framed of the stamp that the artist designed. It is numbered 270 in a notarized series of 500. I have had it about four years. There were in additonal to the special series, ten thousand more of the portrait from the stamp.

as much as i like elvis and his music (for the most part), there were so many others who sang even better than he did; i never could see why people went so ga-ga over him! (maybe it was the hip-shakin' thing; i don't know...) but i do have to admit that my favorite one out of the 50's was the late great hank williams; even though he was a drunk, he wrote some great country songs that are classic, and they can never be duplicated! my daddy loves hank, sr., and i do too! :D (((HUGS))) and love, your friend, karen lynn in texas. great write!

I could never understand what the fuss was about Elvis. Had his records as a kid, but there were some terrfic artists as well as him back then. Ahhh, the life of groupies is fascinating isn't it? [smiles] Great poem.
