All my life, I learned to expect life to be a painful journey, be a survivor and embrace the pain

As I sit and paint the mask of sorrow upon my face,
I watch the dove of happiness soar upward and then vanish without a trace.
I wish to run and hideaway,
Let myself be swallowed by deep shadows of gray.
Make my home amid the shadows and avoid the light,
My head and heart aches and I take comfort in my plight.
From my childhood, I place my hands over my eyes,
Now I am invisible and no one can see through my disguise.
I embrace me and rock to and fro,
I softly sing the Hush-a-by lullaby from long ago.
With nowhere to run to and nowhere to hide,
I open my arms to welcome me inside.
Whispering," No! No! It wasn't meant to be",
" I will truly be all right, cause I will always have me!"
Me will love me and me will care,
When others disappoint and walk away, I will always be there.
Foolish hope caused me to reach out,
Causing me to forget life's rules, what life really is about.
Life embraces looks, images, numbers and labels,
Humans can't see beyond these truths, they are not able.
No one really cares about the loving heart within,
They are blind and can't see beyond the outward skin,
Eyes demand perfection in order to blend.
So I wave the flag of surrender, pack it in, give up the fight,
Because I will never be, or never was someone's just right.

My Mom always told us never to runaway, but face head-on what was in front of us. I may not always face things immediately, but eventually do - it helps me like me. Simply, these are my thoughts ad opinions, and may not work for everyone. At the core of my heart, I always have hope.

Very emotional write. I have always thought I was my own best friend anf over the years I have found it to be true. Others come and go, but as long as you have yourself you are never alone...

Be safe,
Karen

I often feel that being someone else's just right is just another label. Perfection is expected and how disappointed will they then be to find out the other ...is not perfect.

These lines spoke to my want to hide away sometimes too:
"With nowhere to run to and nowhere to hide,
I open my arms to welcome me inside."

Hey SC! "Runaway" is universal...sad but true...the positive point in your poem is the individual is strong enough to make his/her own 'happy'. There are so many who are hurting having no direction and some do not have families to lean on for support. Great writing!
I enjoyed your poem very much. Take care. Hugs and love, ~Capri~

"Me will love me and me will care..."
Oh how comforting it is, when we realize that not only do we have ourselves, when all others seem to turn, but knowing we too have His faith within us to keep it all together...Amen!
Love and Peace~

At twelve I just took my hat and left to be a survivor under my own terms.
Great, you will never be broken, just bent a little and upright again!
