Lost In Her Shadow

Two women sharing the love of one man.

The summer night was heady with the scent of honeysuckle, a night made for love,
The black velvet skies were bedecked with stars, shimmering from above.
My best friend Beth and I were at a country club dance,
Two girls fancy free and looking for romance,
We were as different as night was from day,
Beth was sparkling and vivacious, I was serious and brooding, with little to say.
Then a handsome man introduced himself and wanted to spend some time,
He captured my heart with just one glance, I wanted him for mine.
But the peacock overshadowed the plain brow wren,
This always happened when I was with my friend.
That night the die was cast, Beth had found her mate,
I became the couple's best friend and watching their happiness was my fate.
I stood at Beth's side as she married my only chance for happiness,
I smiled sweetly as my heart wallowed in wretchedness.
I became Godmother to each child and as I held each little dream,
" This should have been my life and happiness", my heart would scream!
Why did Beth always shine, while I was encased in rust,
Her man's casual touch would make me burn with lust.
Years came and went, like a restless tide,
I remained loyal to Beth, the trusted friend at her side.
Then one night his soul just slipped away, joining the wind so free,
Two women mourned his passing, Beth and me.
Sometimes my mind journeys back to that starry night,
But this time he chose me and I was the one shining bright.

Oh my what a beautifully done heartwrenching write. I can hardly see through my tears for I felt your pain throughout. That my friend is a great writer. But what struck me the most thoughout this read was the type of friend you are. She is blest that you were her friend for most would not have kept that friendship in tack and you my friend did just that. I'm glad I found you too. Love and hugs, Bonnie

It is often the truth that this does happen, and for that matter two men falling for one woman. Sad when though we love as lovers in our hearts we must live as friends in reality.

SC,

What a sad but oh so true story. Friend stays secretly in love with best friend's husband. But she had class, to remain friends, even though her heart cried with longing every time she saw her husband.
And at the end her heart was at last free. I really enjoyed this.
