Hearing The Saddest Word

Good-bye is by far the saddest word,
Spoken often, but is painful to be heard.
Good-bye means parting, one will stay and one will leave,
One will travel on and one is left to grieve.
A good-bye puts dreams to an end,
Causes a separation, makes enemies of friends.
There are no joyful partings, just tears for the trail,
Just stoic masked faces and hearts in travail.
A parting limp handskake, or a kiss for the air,
As Zombies polietly dance around feelings, pretending no one cares.
Wishing each other," A happy life", with crossed fingers,
Ignoring the pain and anger that still lingers.
Civilized good-byes with all the warmth of an artic blast,
Composure at all cost, parting with class.
Mummerings from stiff upper lips,
Reduces lovers to just passing ships.
Lips that once shared passionate kisses, so sweet,
Now mummer the final word of retreat.
Lingering anger and unvoiced blame. electifies the air,
Silent screams of," It would have worked, if only you had cared!"
No one had fought to keep the love alive,
So it took a final breath, in the form of a sigh,
As two intimate strangers whisper," Good-bye".

Gene is right to ask why we call it goodbye - apart from the etymology I mean. It's never a good time, a sweet moment, but reading your poetry, SC, is always worthwhile and I mean that sincerely.

I try to never say Good bye, I always say Good Day, or Good Evening, or God speed, Good bye seems always so final. Excellent poem!
Peace, love, and light,

SC I have never taken to good-byes of any kind for they are always sad and cause me to cry. But your words are absolutely beautiful and I thank you for sharing.

Two intimate strangers whispering goodbye.
Provokes a black and white picture of a 1940 railway platform in a drizzling day...yes, that is a goodbye when return wasn't in the cards.

Ah, I remember this music from Final Fantasy, and it always struck me as lonely and full of wanting. Nice pick for this poem of parting. And a superb poem, too :-)
