A thought about my scattered school friends.

Old School Friends

Since we left our town, my friends and I
Could never again just come and stop by
On the phone we get to talk once in a while
Our worlds are so far apart, we can only smile

Our school friends are scattered all over France
Some of them may run into each other by chance
As for me who landed on the other side of the pond
I no longer travel, but by e-mail I correspond

I knew what they were up to, as they were clever
But most had disappeared from our lives forever
I didn’t know whether they were alive or dead
Many things had occurred since some have fled

We lived in a world much different from this one
In our new life we are constantly on the run
We have no more time for our old friends
Only after we retire we find time for comments

The phone enables us to share the news
Some sad, some happy, as life we cruise
Without showing it, friends need each other
Like little children who need their mother.

Very true this is. I don't know how I would've made it through some things without my dear, dear friends.

The blessings of have friends, even the ones far away, or the ones not seen or hear from a long time cos they are the dormant friends that our subconscious wants to believe they will remember us as we remember them.
Then my friend, are the freakish few, the ones that went through life without knowing the meaning of a friend, of a true friend, of a beloved one.
Old School Friends poem are one of remembrances, it will give some a heart tug, to others that little stab of envy.

Yes, we do lose those old friends along the way. Different lives, different directions, different goals, different problems. I am lucky to be in touch with several of my childhood friends whom I loved dearly. We are dozens of years older, but the same familarity exists now that we shared in those youthful days.

I enjoyed your poem because it does express a sadness for those we lose and may never see again.

This just about sums up life for many of us. The world and the people in it have become much too sophisticated, or at least too rushed in our ways that we have no time for idle chit-chat. Still, we maintain our memories, most of us, and that counts for something. Nice poem.
