Tumas Sees The Light

by Amber "V" Moonstone   9/03/08

Just as the sandstorm blew in,
it left Tumas with a clearer mind.
The Buffalo Spirit again spoke to him.

"My mighty Buffalo Warrior,
seek the safety of Powhatan's people,
Go To them and find shelter and peace.

You deserve this justice,
but know, that you will now
start the battle of your life".

Tumas, cried tears of rememberance,
He saw himself as a child in this village,
He remembered his father and his mother.

Still things were a bit foggy,
but with time he knew he would remember
everything about his life before the fire.

I must seek refuge at Powhatan's village,
I am drawn to Karena's remarkable healing powers,
She is the key to unlock this mystery in my mind.

As he was traveling back to Powhatan's village,
the sight of villages left barren and deserted,
triggered anger and sadness in his heart.

How can such a vibrant people be stripped
of their homeland and heritage,
What can I do to help these people.

A tremendous sense of responsibility
overtook him, as he wept for their losses.
I must do something to help the Powhatan people.

When he looked up from his sadness,
he saw many braves surrounding him.
They did not look friendly.

"You, who are you?" one brave yelled to Tumas.
I am "Tumas, Powhatan Warrior".
No, You are a white man posing as one of us.

"You are our prisoner, come with us."
They tore him off Thunderbolt and tied his hands,
Come with us, you must answer to our Chief".

Off they went toward their village.
It was a long journey by foot,
and they finally arrived at their village.

"You must stay here," and the brave shoved him
into a dwelling with other prisoners.
Tumas said nothing, just obeyed.

A few hours passed, and the prisoners were fed
cornmeal biscuits and water.
Tumas hungrily ate every morsel.

Evening became midnight,
and the full moon was illuminating his sadness.
He prayed to the Great Buffalo Spirit to help him.

Falling asleep, his dream began:
Riding along the stream, he sees a beautiful maiden
bathing in the water unaware of his presence.

She sees his shadow and clutches at her body,
As if to hide her beauty and modestly asks for him
to look away and allow her to come out of the water

He cannot look away, for her beauty captivates him
but he bows his head and turns around.
The maiden steps out of the stream and into her sun dried clothing.

She begins to yell at him about her privacy, and how dare he just stand there and watch her.
He bursts out in the most defiant laughter.

"Woman, you are most beautiful, what is your name?"
"Who are you? and I am not to be called Woman"
"I am Tumas, you are on my ground."

"Tumas, what kind of name is that?,
I am "Karena, Eagle Medicine Woman".
How dare you speak to  me in such a manner.

"Oh excuse me, Karena Eagle Medicine Woman"!
Come ride with me back to my village.
I shall introduce you to my Chief, my father.

Tumas awakens just at this moment,
realizes who he is, and what he must do now.
He must escape this capture and return to Karena.

Karena, Eagle Powhatan Medicine Woman,
November 1609

Interesting. The Powhatan were in Virginia weren't they? You are writing a poetic novel I gather. I read your new bio (picture is great by the way) and I wish you luck with it. Seems you are free indeed to travel and pursue this, go for it!
I will read the "Karena short story" I saw posted next. I love Native American subjects.
Best, michael

Be always safe,
