This was actually based on a cross stitch print, not the painting posted here, but I thought this would suit almost as well. :) For People who love winter ;) like me :)

Poem Artwork

Whistle calls wailing under slate skies so stoic and free

as long fingered branches gather and peer at their grace

a crowd of them just like schoolgirls giggling with glee

tinkling music from a mill stream with a silence replaced

twists in snowy chunks of watery relics uncovered here

pondering if my fingers can be flash frozen with frostbite

from the lack of your own hand’s warmth felt oh so near

but such radiance in winter sunsets to soothe the contrite

drifts split and hiding within their white frozen faces

the red of my heart left upon the river’s deep banks

but then my foot follows yours in the step it retraces

to that mill house we met at after going such lengths

without even looking for more Nor’easters approaching

I’d still trundle these bundles on the very same paths

for the glow in the window though far off is encroaching

upon the dark that despair knows will never quite last

loved there and then with the words of Barrett-Browning

when electricity ran off upon the wind’s blustery flight

so much beneath blankets we shared during the crowning

of winter’s pale peace beneath the great northern light

I am not a fan of winter's bite -- but with a poem of romance and passion as you have offered here -- might easily be tempted to desire a nights stay or two in the place you paint -- just another very wonderful poem Michelle -- I truly enjoyed reading it -- may peace and love lead you down the path to joy -- JMW

Michelle,

I like winter, don't mind cold, it's the wind PLUS cold that I mind. LOL Yesterday, had an IceStorm: mainly in the trees, it was gorgeous. Stay tuned for some of the pictures I took to grace some of my poetry. Yours is beautifully penned, a Winter Wonderland. Yes.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Michelle, this fine painted canvas, through your words, brings your metaphors alive to bring sounds and laughter to this reader. The cold nipped at my fingers and ears as I enjoyed this great writing...I enjoyed every line.

Michelle,
You instil great intensity in this piece, it has depth and richness well beyond the words themselves.

Embracing imagery, and a fine use of simile, make this poetic prose a soft cloak that one can snuggle with and find solace in.

A wonderful ode to winter and the picturesque mills that ground the grain for the daily bread keeping us warm from it.

I really like the atmosphere you created.
So many wonderfully effective alliterations too, like in the very first line (my favorite) and the second line of the second stanza (another favorite).

Yes I agree with Fee as I look at the winter blanket and think of a cozy fireplace burning, snuggled to my husband sipping a glass of wine. Thank you for the beautiful picture Michelle.
