Over a tranquil garden of stone
Stones of many types
Stood Proudly where grass now overgrown
From Field of white crosses
granite stones In Normandy to Hawai’i
Bore the lives and losses
The sayings, epitaphs, capture my fancy
I imagine a person fit
Scowling, smiling, talking a bit
There is a story in this powerful place
In these cases...
“Hooray...Here I lie”
or
“The Defense Rests”
a lawyer no disguise
even
“Here lies an atheist, all dressed up and no where to go...”
While to each his own
comes a moan
Folk s s omehow deal with their loss
A pity on loan
Until the farewell is complete
Widows and widowers alike
Care for the grounds in sight
To which they glare
‘What happened to the perpetual care?’
Grass overgrown, weeds to pull
Now I understand so dull
Too many goodbyes, final calls
Except for those we miss
Those hugs and kisses
Plentiful then, now regrets
Of unknown purpose and origin
Beyond our understanding
and reasoning
To whom the bells toll
is the final call
To wither away to dust
we know now the cost
With a grain of salt
we look for the faults
In the darkest corner of pain
we long for thoughts of finer grain
For our feelings are curved
carved, smooth
ill feelings well deserved
Sure better resting places than these
In loneliness we can strive
I wonder what mine will be so contrived?
