DOWNSHIFTING

by Cynthia Buhain-Baello
September 18,2008

It is a lifestyle outwardly simple,
But it is living inwardly richer.
Moderation is its principle-
For enjoyment of life made longer.

It tempers pursuit of excess wealth,
Debunks "more is better" assumption.
It is a formula for better health,
Adds quality time for consumption.

It's voluntary simplicity,
And a virtual choice to live with less,
Although it is not forced poverty
It is a richer life nonetheless.

When needless desires are controlling,
And our wants in life are causing stress,
It's time to consider Downshifting,
Let's be content with true happiness.

"Whoever loves money, never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless."

Ecclesiastes 5:10

Times are changing and lifestyles are getting a lot more simple. Time to "shift" down.

just came off vacation spending Cynthia, your verse is right on time because I'm trying to readjust from eating everything, spending too much money and practically doing nothing and enjoying the heck out of being off for two weeks, hugs

I think it was J.B. Priestly whose words I never forget: Desire less, have more. Something like that. Good point here.

Cynthia,

Excellent advice. Don't love money, but wish I had enough to be able to pay bills and eat once in a while!!!! Everything going up but my VA disability check. Hard ... thank you for the reminder to count what I have. Well done.

(In the title: Forgot the "S" :) )

Cynthia,

The words you write are so very true....money, too much or too little can often lead to despair.

A very well written piece from a lady who cares.

Much enjoyed, your good friend, Stuart
