“My enemies are not the ones who sneer and make fun. I could put up with that or even hide from them. But it was my closest friend, the one I trusted most. We enjoyed being together, and we went with others to your house, our God.”
~
Psalm 55:12-14

            You, friend, were the one
            I trusted most,

           the one
I would have
laid my life down to defend,

            the one
I would have
believed could never betray,

            the one
I thought to be
one in the bond of love, faith,

            the one
I loved in innocence,
in spirit and in truth,
in celebration of
who we were –
reconciled
to Christ and
one another,

            the one
I refuse to believe
has forgotten as much,

We went with others
to God’s house,

            the one
I would have
called place of community,

            the one
I would have
believed could never betray,

            the one
I thought to be
sanctuary of worship,

            the one
I loved in innocence,
in spirit and in truth,
in celebration of
who we were –
reconciled
to Christ and
one another,

            the one
I refuse to believe
has forgotten as much.

Dawn, this is so well written. It is something that is hard to get over, but you will. When I told my long time friend that I was in a Bible study, she laughed at me hysterically. My Christianity turned her off so badly. We are now estranged for good, but I still pray for her.

I can feel your pain and disappointment pouring from each line. I suppose I should say, "Never judge another by your own capibilities" be they good or bad. Not everyone is as strong as you nor can everyone always hold true to the convictions they attest to. Many people walk through life confused, saying things they really don't understand. Forgiveness is not always easy, but necessary if we are ever going to heal and grow. Very well penned piece, Dawn.
Take care,
Sherry

Sadly I have to agree that Christian community can be the most destructive, where people shut down the reality of who they actually are underneath the often earnest desire to be what others expect them to be - and what they might themselves HOPE to be - but haven't got there yet!! When the "truth comes out", then pain and confusion often result. I am sooo sorry, Dawn, that you are a casualty of such deep-felt, heartbreaking betrayal. I can only say that Jesus knows the extent of your pain - and your "friend's" - and is probably the only One who can adequately "bear it away". Unconditional love causes us to "pray for those who persecute us", as the selflessness and faithfulness of your words amply demonstrate. Faith and love bear all things, and therein is there hope of resolution. Bless you, Dawn. May you know the joy of a true reconcilation and a forgiveness that will ultimately make you and your friend all the stronger. TY Kate xx

A most powerful psalm, poem, and message, Dawn. It usually is those closest to us, who can hurt us the most.

Dawn this is superbly written! I think from my own experience we tend to think others feel as we do but learn that not everyone cares with the samne depth of feeling. Some of us make those we love our top priorty, others do not.

I needed to know that being alone with my pain something not indifferent for others. Your words are ripe and sad...tender but understanding. Unlike me...I don't understand betrayal when love was so honest....at first. Thank you.
Susan
