Brother Mine

How is your brother?

Or do you still belong to the world that would divide
its citizens into the well and the unwell, into those
who need help and those who don’t?

Would you wash your hands and deem him “other,”
say to him, “You need help,” then turn, turn
and go about the unexamined life carefree?

Am I my brother’s keeper?

The same blood flows through your veins.
The same potential for good and evil resides within your hearts.
The same God aches for your brokenness.

Don’t you hear his anguished cries?
Do you not see the honest seeking of his spirit?
Will you not risk the pain kept locked inside and go to him?

How is my brother?

You are my brother, and brother, mine, I love you
and I see the pain you refuse to see. And I would
walk with you through your valley.

Would you walk with me through mine?

We are a world of terrorized
and traumatized people. We
see through eyes of "self" instead
of eyes of acceptance.

To accept and care
for others without regards to what
they can "give" or "do" for us
requires that we allow others to
think and choose what is right for
their life. When accept others as human
we accept our self. When we deny them
individuality, we kill our own species.

But unless a person is taught how
to love and care for others they
are unable to pass on those values.
We are taught by what we experience.

We as humans only succeed when love survives.
Love only survives when it is given freely in
celebration of our individual lives.

"You are after all, dirt looking at dirt." La Belle Rouge.

Such strength, grace and compassion expressed here, Dawn. To be able to sacrificially give and not to count the cost is one of the greatest gifts a person can bestow upon another. To be firstly aware of another's need, and then to be prepared to answer it oneself is just quite awesome in these days of mounting pressure and strife. But then, to frankly admit to one's own needs and to make oneself vulnerable is another step up on the ladder of personal growth, too. You are talking of a road that few of us are prepared to travel, Dawn, and I salute you for this. You deftly encapsulate here what is so sadly lacking in our lives and communities at this tragic hour. Stirring and challenging, Dawn. TY. Kate xx
