to my chagrin.

So despicable, so
cowardly, I thought, so very
like a man.

You shrugged your slumping
shoulders, shook off
responsibility.

Deep, true eyes went vacant,
died. Moral courage collapsed
as did civility.

And so it went. And so
it goes. And I am left to
journey on alone.

Heavy load you piled on me,
but it’s a load I’ll carry until
you come back home.
