I have taken you for granted
For much too long, I fear,
When you are the one
Who show me that you care.
You don’t always feel the need
To tell me all your woes,
Though you share with me the thorns,
You also share the rose.

How often have I overlooked
Simple things you’ve done and said,
Like sending me a song to play
Before I go to bed.
Asking how I spent my day
And what my plans are for the morrow,
Then really listening when I tell you
Of things that brought me sorrow.

You listen to me complain,
You smile when I rant and rave.
You even offer advice
About the silly things I crave.
You’re such a giving person
You ask for nothing in return.
Everything you say and do
Shows your care and concern.

You enjoy my poems, I know you do
You tell me all the time.
You send me poems by old English poets
This could never be a crime.
And even though you don’t write poetry
I know that if you could,
You’d send the words straight from your heart
Which, to me, would sound as good.

You show me what true friendship means
Each and every chance you get.
You understand all I say and do
Without becoming upset.
All the things you do for me
Don’t you ever stop,
For on my ladder of friendship,
You’ve made it to the top!!
