I’ve reached
that time in life
when we all
look back.
We want
to see if
we've done
all we can.
With a sigh
we realize
the goals
we’ve met
have turned
out to be
more important
than goals
not met.
We recognize
unattained dreams
that are still
within our reach,
and find time
to go after them
and make them
happen.
In looking back,
we tend to
view love as
is that all
there is?
And yet,
we can also
be truly happy
for the lucky few
where it’s forever.
Our children
are raised,
our grandkids
are growing,
and we finally
can relax
and recognize
that our
second chance
is in them.
In looking back,
we learn that
happily ever after
seems so much
less important
in the long haul,
for we’ve come
to find
that our genuine
security lies
in happily every
now and then.
Over time,
we’ve come to
accept the me
‘as is’
as being pretty
damned good,
considering
what we've
been through
and at last
we recognize
the true wisdom
of allowing
ourselves
the gift
of contentment.
There comes
a time for us all.
This poem made me think of all the things I wished I could have changed, but on further reflection, if I did that, I might not be who I am, and who knows, that might not be good.

As a very reflective man,I dwell considerable time on my past. I find comfort in entertaining not only myself but other children with my childhood naivette and hapless adventures. Now approaching 52 I have not given up dreaming of something else to attain, indeed my age is the spur. Although sounding contrary, this forward looking focus gives me contentment.

I could not have said this better. You have stepped inside my head and heart lately with this one. After getting laid after 17 yrs. of loyal service to that low life...well anyway..lol! I am NOW content to WRITE AND LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!! THANK YOU CJ!!
Amen! A great uplifting poem with wisdom message, CJ! I heartily concur! Love the line "in happily every now and then." That is reality and enough to be thankful for, instead of the "forever fantasy"
Well stated, yes time creeps up on us and as we look around and count those of us still standing we realize what is truly important in life and what is not.

Your ending hit the nail on the head. Now that I'm retired, I only have my grandson to entertain me. And another on the way. But as for my career...least said soon mended (that's why I'm having this dementia). The only good thing about it, is that at least I ended up with a decent pension. Lovely poem. Victor
Your so right...it's called Contentment, when we can relax and look back. At least our minds and bodies are no longer "rushing" through life :o) Love the poem, with a knowledge we can only realize in our later years!
How true it is! I have been doing some looking back as well. Your poem speaks to my heart as I know it does others. I have achieved some of my dreams, such as my teaching degree...lack of work in the coal mines...helped ignite that fire...my husband was laid off for years about as much as he was not. But I look at my children's smiling faces, and my grandchildren as well...and I've got to be thankful if there was nothing else in this life...they would be enough...you've made me stop and count my blessings, my home, my marriage, clothes...oh this could go on and on....excellent write!

A passionate and poignant memoir written by a woman whose life has been guided by the words: "I am here to learn how to love well." The book is a deep examination of relationships, family, motivation, and honoring of the Self.
TRUE STORY. Bella survived an abusive powerbroker father with organized crime ties, a drug-addicted mother and a physically/sexually abusive brother. Shocking & inspirational. When she couldn't cry, she tattooed a crying angel to cry for her.
After a long awaited weekend visitation caused by false allegations of sexual abuse, Glen got to see his children for the first time in over two months. He promised them that they would never be apart again and then they disappeared.
