I love a carrousel,
like a giant children’s top
spinning beauty round
in a blur of colors,
a herd of prancing ponies,
faster, faster, in the music.
Oom-pah-pah
Oom-pah-pah Up and down they canter,
a tireless stampede
of wooden strides
each racing for the lead
to the cadence of cymbals
in the hurdy-gurdy’s tune
Oom-pah-pah - clang!
Oom-pah-pah - clang! It occurs to me that
our marriage has become
like the carrousel
spinning out of control
and out of synch
with less ups, more downs,
Oom-pah-pah - clang!
Oom-pah-pah - clang! round and round going nowhere,
unlike the bold steeds
whirring by in a blur,
I no longer see a blur
where you begin and
where I end.
Oom-pah-pah - clang!
Oom-pah-pah - clang! Where we’ve been is colored
only by deception
and the cymbals,
a metaphor for hurt.
Where we’re going
is no longer a question.
I’ll never look at a carrousel
the same again.

Wow. The playful beginning makes the "clang!" that much more poignant. A wonderful, sad, and understandable piece to which we can all relate when our worlds start spinning off kilter.
You seem to miss the one important fact about the carrousel. It's still running strong, and no pieces are broken. I used to set up a Merry-Go-Round when I was young and leading the life of a carny. I used to put a lot of thought into its mechanics, and how they mimmick life. The lights burning brightly, the wind in my hair, and the fact that I became part of something industructible.

Reminds me of Mary Poppins, and let me admit to say I never tire seeing that film if for nothing else, for its misic. Mind you your poem does end sadly since you have been deceived. Pity man's fickleness. Everyone deserve better. Victor

Reading this poem evoked the line from the song that goes something like, 'Riding along on a carousel, gonna catch up to you'
Highly improbable on a carousel. The only variation is that one party might be on the up while the other descends:
It suddenly occurs to me,
you and I have become
so much like the carrousel I love
but our spinning is out of control
and all out of synch
with less ups, more downs,
When we jump off the roundabout, we run at speed and often out of control for a short while (depending on the circumsances), maybe fall, but then given the right conditions, we can gradually rise to our feet again.

Nice view of thought as you compare the carousel with a life that is more downs than ups ...a reality of many within the journey of life and ...love...
wonderful creation poetess and very meaningful, I can relate, my wife and I have been together for a long, long time, past 20 years and it gets this way sometimes but I made an oath, "for better or worse"
The delightful part of this poem is the excellent metaphor of the Carrousel's fantasy being likened to life as should be. When the Carrousel is polished and repaired, it always maintains that glow and the music box always has its Oom-pah-pah. The sadness is wanting to get off. Its reality is knowing when we have to put our feet on the ground and search for a more stable ride. As always CJ, your poetry, IMHO, is always a shiny Carrousel.

So many of us go along for the ride in life but soon tire of it thus leading to the high divorce rates of over 50%. Some wonder did they get off too soon and others lament that it was so late.
