Kingston Trio
"They Call the Wind Mariah"
Away out here they have a name for rain and wind and fire.
The rain is Tess, the fire's Joe and they call the wind Mariah.

Mariah blows the stars around and sets the clouds a-flyin'.
Mariah makes the mountains sound like folks was out there dyin'

They Call the Wind Mariah
By Kathy Armijo

They call the wind Mariah
It speaks of turbulence
And speaks of dyin’

Mariah is singing here, today
The wind chimes are a clangin’
The leaves, they are a flyin’

Inside the house
You hear her woeful sound
Mariah, Mariahhhh

It bangs the trees against the house
Speaking of her mightiness
Mariah, Mariaaahhhhhh

And when she’s finally said her piece
She fondly bids to us “Adieu”
Until the next time I visit you

Adieu, Adieuuuu
Mariah, Mariah
Mariahhhhh.  Adieu

I never realized how good that song lyric was until you posted it AND I love your poem about the wind. I love wind, hate it when its calm. When I was a kid I wrote many of my first poems about the wind, snow and rain (now all lost) Thanks for YOUR MUSIC...

Yes I remember that song as the theme song for a movie I watched back in the sixties or seventies and how it stirred somthing inside of me each time I heard it after that just as this poem of yours stirs somthing rich and wonderful in the memory banks. Well done.

Wonderful write, and yes, I remember that song. Daddy used to listen to groups like the Kingston Trio, the Platters, Frank Sinatra, etc.--still does, as far as I know. He also likes the old country music, opera, polka, some pop--he's got an ecletic musical tastes. Very well penned, Kathy; enjoyed!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :D

The first time ever I heard it sung, was, of all the singers in the world, Clint Eastwood on that unforgetable film about the gold rush.
Always associated that song with the rough times where you word and a handshake was more worth than a signed paper, and where the wind always came with a promise of something better for tomorrow...
