Yearbook

© By Kathy Armijo

Found my old high school yearbook

Thought I’d take a trip

Down memory lane

Haunted by what you [all] wrote

On the pages of the book

Clever, youthful and inspiring

I can still hear the quacking sound

As I’d walk down the hall

Did I really walk like a duck?

I sit here chuckling about the fun we had

Car racing around the high school track, b u s t e d

What was I thinking?

Remembering …

     The kisses we shared

     Telling each other our secrets

     Science experiments gone amuck

Parking in your old pickup truck

     Plotting life’s course

     Our senior picnic

I drank my first beer – Schlitz

What a waste, didn’t like the taste

I wonder where you are

From my thoughts, you’re never far

“Did you reach your star?

Are you still in the vicinity?

Are your pastures greener?

Are you still beautiful/handsome?”

Wherever you are

Here’s hoping that your life has been good

Just as I always knew it would

Enjoyable and humorous, this poem makes me think of an old friend I met recently after she left me a message. All those memories from the past mixed with the changes that we could see today. A strange feeling, hard to describe.

It is like stepping into a different world to reread the words penned so many years ago... And I wonder... where they are and how life has treated them...

I am going to a picnic Alumni reunion June 21, looking forward to seeing people I have not seen since 5th reunion. Did not even bother to go to other reunions. Was worried about my weight but was told men will mostly be bald and we have all aged. Put my mind to rest. Anyway am going to be brave and go.

I envy you your High School yearbook, I left school in great ten and became a man when I wasn't finish being a boy. It left a gap in my life that was never able to be recovered. I had a different set of experiences and they too created a lot of memories but still...I always wished I could have a do-over when it came to staying in school.

A cute stroll back down memory lane. I, too, pull out my old year books occasionally, and even talk on the phone to some of the people I attended school with many years ago. It's interesting to find out what some have done, who they married, etc.

Year book, pictures, love crushes and bullies smirks, prom queen, and all those forgotten moments that come back once one open that darn book, showing your "best" picture that is of the same quality, for oneself, of those in the Postoffice FBI most wanted.
Yearbook? left it alone, some of those faces are no more here, and that...hurts.
