“Hello!” A voice greeted. I turned around to find a young man’s blue eyes so kindly looking up into mine.

“I’m David,” he extended his hand to shake mine.

“Hi! I’m very pleased to meet you!” I paused for a moment in wonderment. I looked at this young man in the wheelchair. He had blond hair, and the most azure blue eyes I had ever seen. A rather handsome fellow! I thought he must be in his late 20’s. He had fair skin, a clean-shaven face, and a confident jaw-line.

“I’m Melody Smith,” I spoke again, “I’m sent from the agency for a house nanny’s position. I’m just waiting to meet with Mrs. Tennant now.”

“Oh, Mrs. Tennant is my mother. She should be down here shortly.” He smiled the sweetest smile that I’ve ever seen!

He reminds me so much of someone whom I used to know - someone who I had once loved - someone who had once loved me; but for the life of me, I cannot remember his name now. It seems an eternity has passed since I had ever been loved at all.

“Please have a seat! And I will be in my room if you need me,” he spoke again. Then he turned around and wheeled himself down the hallway, disappearing into one of those rooms.

Mrs. Tennant came down the stairs, and I was relieved to find a very pleasant woman. The servants had just arrived, bringing with them a platter of biscuits and tea, setting the perfect ambiance for a very pleasant interview. I watched her curiously. Mrs. Tennant had very elegant features. She had a heart-shaped face, framed by curly blond ringlets that would bounce ever so slightly when she spoke. She wore her hair down to about her shoulders - a rather young fashionable woman, I thought. Her still unmarked, porcelain-fine skin seemed to have a certain glow of its own. Just how did someone so young looking find herself the owner of such a large, beautiful Victorian Manor? Once more, my mind had begun to wander.

I handed her my resume, which I thought was well-prepared, with all my wonderful credentials from my former employers. She seemed rather pleased as she read through it.

"You know, Melody," she decided to call me by my first name, "This is a live-in nanny’s position for my son. David was in a car accident 3 years ago, which had caused him to be wheelchair-bound. The accident has also affected his mind as well, and he also has some speech problems. We are doing our best to find the proper healing and therapy for him. I think you will make a very good friend for David because you and David are about the same age. I’m looking for a friend for my son too, not just a nanny."

I’m really a bit confused now by all this. Is she talking about the same David that I had just met earlier?

"If you accept the position," she continued to speak, pointing her finger to the direction above and behind me, "You'll be staying in one of those rooms down the hallway."

"Is David the one with blond hair and blue eyes?" I couldn't help it. I just had to ask.

"Oh, yes! Have you two met already? When was that?" She sounded curious.

"Oh, he was here just a while ago before you came down," I told her, "He introduced himself to me, and then he wheeled himself back into his room."

"Oh? But that’s impossible!" Mrs. Tennant looked at me with wide-eyed wonderment. "The accident had affected both of David’s hands as well, he could not have wheeled himself out of that room, and for him to even be speaking to you at all is a mystery to me. Are you sure that was David whom you have spoken with?"

"Well, he has blond hair, and blue eyes, and a clean-shaven face..." I tried to remember the David whom I have just met with earlier.

"Okay then! Let’s just clear the mystery," she spoke as she got up from her chair, "I’ll take you to meet David now, and let you both get acquainted with each other."

"When can you start?" She asked.

"I can start now...if you like," I answered.

I suppose I can accept the position immediately since I don’t seem to have anywhere else I can go now. I hope I didn't sound too desperate.

I followed Mrs. Tennant down the hallway into David’s room, where I saw David sitting happily in his wheelchair. His blond hair was neatly-combed, his face was clean-shaven. His blue eyes, sparkling with delight, were fixated at a certain point on the wall - he was gazing intently into a painting.

And inside that painting – There I am!!!...Here, in the midst of nature’s peaceful idyll, playing the songs of my life!! Sometimes the tune I play is sad and is filled with sorrow, and David would feel sad too, but other times the tune I play is lively and happy, and it would make David smile.

David would meet me here every evening to hear me play my songs. In this picture perfect field of dreams, David can walk. He is young and handsome, with wavy blond hair and the most azure blue eyes; a clean-shaven face with confident jaw-line. I would play my songs here for David, telling him all about my life and my dreams.

XXXXX

Mrs. Tennant stood there by the door. She looked at her son’s unkempt face. His eyes, staring into space at the painting on the wall. This painting, entitled, “Sweet Melody”, that shows a beautiful young woman in a white dress, serenading in a field, would always catch David’s attention.

If only this woman is real. She sighed, closing the door behind her.

MY, WHAT AN INTERESTING STORY! MAYBE ONE DAY THEY WILL BECOME A PART OF THE PICTURE PERMANENTLY AND MELODY AND DAVID WILL ALWAYS BE TOGETHER ...OR... MAYBE DAVID WILL BEGIN TO LOOK AT MELODY AND EACH DAY GET BETTER AND BETTER, RECOVERING TO THE POINT WHERE HE WALKS AND TALKS, WITH SHINING BLUE EYES AND A STRONG JAW LINE. ENJOYED AND THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Wow! Very special! I like the fact that she would be so openminded to let herself love a handicapped young man. The heart does what the heart does, I guess... Lovely story, Daniel.

O it is so well done, and it is an art which brings about the character to life like this, There is this film of Julia Roberts 'Dying young' which I happened to see more than ten years ago. It was also a wonderful story of a young nanny ( Julia Roberts) hired by an industrialist father to look after his young and handsome son dying of cancer and how the son falls in love with her and wanted to live a normal life with her . He does so for a few days until he is consumed by the disease.A tragic love story but some very beautiful moments. You will do well with movie stories too , !JK

Your story has a special meaning for me. While I'm not exactly sure how it ended. It was as if wishful thinking could make things happen. I wish the world would work that way. If it did, Christopher Reeve would be here with us, walking, and playing the part of Superman again.

Very nicely crafted indeed!
