Tossing Memories

A long time in coming,
eight years after his death--
grandpa, father, patriarch--
however he is remembered.
Here we are, now, cleaning
what he left after his death,
older things, newer things, his mark--
he kept everything he ever owned.

Now here we are screening
all the things he left behind--
grandson, my father, and uncle--
mostly tossing, sometimes keeping.
Memories long forgotten, returning
as they are tossed, lost in time.
Trash can after trash can full,
filling the dumpster to the top ring.

Grandpa's old lunch pail, now rusting--
that hat from the World's Fair in Vancouver--
old suitcases with liners still intact,
old coffee tins, wood, tools, and more.
Bits and pieces of childhoods and upbringing,
days long past and memories longer--
time to move on and deal with the facts,
holding onto memories and tossing more.

Oh, J., I wish I could be there, I love the history in a persons life, the keepings and the trappings, the scraps of paper, the whole packrat philosophy! I admit to being such a one...I have "stuff"!! This is a great piece!!

This was really nice. You'll never know what treasure you might have under your roof. Very sentimental piece!

Sandie Angel :o)

P.S. Take them to the antique road show to evaluate them, you might be surprised at what's the value on some. They might be worth a lot more in both sentimental value as well as monetary value.

.....just a thougt.....
