My amazing mom. . . (Picture by my cousin, David Ord)

Poem Artwork

She Body Surfed at 70

Tanned arms overhead, arched like a dancer,

She gauged the height and strength of the wave,

The swell rose, she kicked into the curl,

And with a swoosh of water and foam.

She glided to shore, emitting an exuberant yelp,

Looking left and right for us, the “kids,”

For her brothers, for her husband and soulmate.

Few of us shared that timing to catch the cusp

The way she could, the innate knowledge and rhythm.

As she skidded into the sand, she smiled and laughed,

And turned back to the breakers for another ride,

Always another ride, another ride, another ride,

Until the sun set. Now I find myself bereft,

A struggle to accept the eternal enormity

Of the waves, of the world, without her.

Eileen, this is so beautiful...filled with magic and then sadness in your last lines....but you have this beautiful memory, always.

Some people keep their bodies in such shape they can swim, body surf and do most anything at age 70. Not me though, am slowed up and overweight. This is a lovely poem and sorry about your mother and she will be missed but she is with you always in spirit. She lived so well her life doing what she wanted to do.

Such beautiful strength in these lines of the "can do" spirit - of not letting age slow one down - excellent, Eileen!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Was in Hawaii, sufed (or tryied) on the north beach, (humongous waves) sat on the beach with a humongous Mai-Tai and promised "no more, once was enough after swallowing half the Pacific)

Alot of people that are up in years are still body surfing and even regular surfing...after I did my back in, I find it hard to do both, but I try like hell...wish i could see better at distance, would be easier to see the incoming sets...Ed & Rufuz

You have a wonderful way with words, Eileen.
You described her body surfing perfectly.
