Melancholy Moon (The Ogress Chronicles, Chapter III)

Charlie will dock me a few points for being so late with this, but... here it is anyway...
(See Charlie's site for Chapter II and the initial Ogress challenge. Chapter I is featured on my site.)

Leaning her head against the window frame,
she looked out at the blue moon
rising…

Perfect, she thought…
a melancholy moon
to match my melancholy mood!

She gazed out at the blue dusk
gathering upon the hills
and sighed
as the tears started to fall…
“landing on eyes
and sliding down [her] nose”

Why couldn’t they accept her for who she was?
It had all started so long ago…
            This blue mood
she kept trying to dig herself
            out of…

It began when she was just 2/3
            when her mother wasn’t home
Her older ogre brother
would sneak down the stairs,
making sure no one was looking
and open the deep chest freezer…
      C--R--E--A--K…
The sound was enough to send chills
            racing up an ogre’s spine!

Then…
Her brother would reach in
and pull out…
THE PIG HEAD!

Firmly grasping it between his hands
he would turn those frozen features towards us…
And we… frozen in fear…would scream
            and finally run.

The tears continued…
“splashing-exploding-undoing all”
as she remembered the time her ogress sister
had told her she couldn’t sing…
So what if she’d had a frog in her throat!
What should anyone expect after eating such a meal?

And that other time….
            After she’d eaten the hoarse….
            Oh my!

And the depression she had stepped into…
That time she stepped off the cliff…

Yes, she thought,
she had a right to cry
-to cry a whole “Requiem in Rain”!

So she cried
those cleansing tears…
“a releasing reformation in that.”

And she vowed…
She “would not run for cover”!
She would stand up straight and TAll,
and she would “simply let it rain…
inside and out”
and be full of thankful”ness” for her
“blessings and small wonders”
and her dreams inside instead…

After all…
They couldn’t take those away from her!

Outside…
the moon turned yellow with hope...

Inside…
she smiled,
closed her eyes,
and started dreaming…

            And somewhere…
            far below her,
            the drops of rain
            stopped falling…

I like the line about raining inside and out. Better to have swallowed the frog in the throat than to have eaten pig's head...Jerry

This is so imaginative and does follow in suite with the others. Stories worthy of perhaps a child's book....

Be always safe,

Absolutely gripping and beautiful story of one who would not let her dreams be stolen or better yet, let go of her dreams...Loved it!

I don't know about naming her just yet...I kinda think that I can identify with her more readily without a name. Maybe we should call her Cryslie or Charssa...hee, hee...
Maybe we should just have a contest for others to name her...

Either way...I actually have chapter 4 written, but won't post it until tomorrow. It took me so long to write Chapter 3 because I had two conflicting stories going...now the two mesh better. So...take your pick and post number 4 and I will post mine as number 5, or... you can have the weekend as reprieve and I will post number 4 tomorrow and you can post number 5 later...

Crys...

I've always loved that comment from ness... it gave me such comfort- the idea of raining inside and out is beautifull,,,, (lots of commas for ya),,, and I think you do it justice here. The colors you use are great too, as her comment mentioned color changes. So, though I docked you for being late, I'll add them back again. You did a great job turning a comment into a story, and I love it.

Now our prissy ogress has character. She's a softy for all her dainty ways. And now I know why the rain let up so suddenly the other day...

Sorry about her terrible ogress sister... her saying you couldn't sing... what on earth was her problem anyways? And that old pig head... such a small thing-- merely a handful compared to what it would have been like had it been you and I instead... I think I need to name her. So I'll be looking around your den for a good name-- 3 up from the bottom. --Charlie
