Papa and His Peanuts

Papa loved his peanuts
and always had a few
stashed in his pick-up truck
and in his pocket too.

He always drove his truck
with windows half-way down,
so he could flick the shells out
upon the roadside ground.

He’d shell those nuts with one hand
and skin them nice and slick;
then pop them in his mouth,
so fast it made me sick…

Yes, papa loved his peanuts!
He ate them by the pound.
They made him sorta nutty,
but really he’s quite sound.

Now, I don’t care for peanuts,
but each time I see one;
I think about my dad
and his peanut-popping fun.

This is sweet, Cryssa. I say we are all nuts in our own way.
It's funny how a habit like this can be your Papa's trademark.
Well-done--in a nutshell!

Love,
Connie

your poems are 'easy' to read ( which in my book is good) and call me old fashioned but I do like a poem with a bit of humour that also happens to ryme!

That is a beautiful tribute to your Dad. It's the small things we remember about our loved ones when they are no longer with us.
Enjoyed very much. (Also reminded me of my Dad)

This is a really fun poem, Cryssa. I enjoyed the word play and rhythym as well as the fun characterization of your father. We used to hit the penny peanut machines when we were out with my Dad, but I'm guessing you're enough younger than me, you don't remember the peanuts at that price. Thanks for all your kind comments on our Missouri connections--I know Missourians can eat as many peanuts as Georgians....Jerry

Loved this...my father also like peanuts. I didn't spend a great deal of time with and hadn't thought about it in a long time, but each summer when we would spend our vacation with him, he always had a supply of peanuts on hand! Enjoyed this much my freind, well written and flows smoothly! The color was a nice touch as well!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

This fair bobbles along with its popping popcorn rhythm and metre in accordance with the happy-go-lucky feel of the character and activity. Impressive skills in your family! This is very upbeat, Cryssa, and part of a warm familial memory bank we would all love to lay store to. I guess Charlie's suggestion of another "p" word in the first stanza would perfect the alliteration nicely... I can somehow hear a guitar being picked at high speed along with the pace of this jolly write... :)) TY Kate xx

...and Binkie too, who shelled them in his mouth and spat out the skins... I loved the poem. You've got a misplaced syllable or two in last 2 lines, stanza 3... check it out. Love ya! (and what do you think about the word "packed" instead of stashed?) --Charlie
