For Marie Yolene...
The ramblings of this mother's heart...

Poem Artwork

Once…

I met you …

once…

three years ago

you stood—

unsmiling,

dignified and straight

as others told me what you said—

(or what they wanted me to hear)

Opportunities and learning

were the reasons that they gave

for you giving him to me.

They said that you were happy

that your son was in my home;

but your face belied their words…

It spoke of pain and suffering

and of this child…lost.

I realized that your son

was given at great cost.

But when I looked upon your face,

I realized something more…

for I saw what you have given to my son.

You…

who gave my son his smile,

his eyes,
and his quiet, gentle ways--

and filled his life with love

in his seven youngest years.

I wished then I could share with you

his deep concern for you…

Not only that, but also of

the love he had for you--

the pedestal he held you on--

the measure that he gave---

No one could equal you!

Three years have past

since that day--

that day I once met you…

and I wish that I could share with you

the boy I call my son.

Hurricanes have come between

and swept some lives away

from the Artibonite valley

where once…

my child played.

How I wish that I could tell you

of my worry now for you…

Once…

the Lord showed me His hand

when your son was given to me;

and once again I ask the Lord

to show His hand for you

through the calming of the storms.

I promise you,

we’ll meet again

upon a distant shore

and then I’ll share my son with you--

the son, who

once…

was yours.

I have a son and could never give him up. The love this mother had so that her son could grow and be taken care of is immense. You show us how she felt and you felt. An excellent work.

You have done so well here in expressing the harsh contrasts between love and agony, hope and abandonment. Your feeling for this lady is given so well, yet nobody could help, given what you have written, but feel the pain she must harbor. As you said, there will come a day, but the living in between can get overwhelming...Jerry

This is agonising stuff for all of us when we consider the feelings you so carefully articulate on both sides of the mothering fence. The loss and gain of children whose personal circumstance necessitates the handover of care. Surrogacy is such a privelege and yet brings with it the complications of such stated pain. Only the most compassionate and empathetic hearts can surely be suited to such a high-risk task. I applaud you, Cryssa. You speak of "once", a mere moment in the ocean of time, yet what you have undertaken and the duty of care you so lovingly and willingly apply yourself to, without heed to the emotional repercussions, is for all time and impacts the lives of many. Your loving home and open heart and arms have become a life raft for some of the most vulnerable children of the world. This is so much more than a poem. It is love in action. Bless you richly, Kate xx

Sadness and joy, as Art Sun said, sensitivity and compassion, as Edwin wrote... I find these different feelings that blend harmoniously. It's a piece that speaks to me as a mother and that I have read with tears and a smile. The love you share is wonderful Cryssa.

She looks like someone has just sucked the happiness right out of her-- she must love him fierce. Your poem caught a lot of emotions just right-- you told your story with little formality-- just simple and plain-- understated, and that's what allows the readers to feel. When you milk it, they can't, because the writer's already done it for them. Great job! --Charlie

As for Haiti-- I feel as Sara Coslett-- how terrifying for them who have nothing to spare, to lose everything again and again. If anyone would like to send money to Haiti, Cryssa and I are raising money for their benefit at piggyink.com Order a book from us with some extra gravy, and we'll make sure all the money gets into some capable hands who live in and love Haiti and all of Haiti's children, and will do what they can to help all who come to their doors. --Charlie

Heartfelt poem, Cryssa. I've been so worried for the people of Haiti. They have so little and then to get hit with storm after storm after storm.

The other day the US government announced it was sending money in aid to Georgia. I asked myself, what of Haiti? Who is taking care of Haiti?

I think this poem clearly shows Marie Yolene made a smart choice. Your heart is filled with pure love.

Very deep, yet genuine gratitude for the gift that was given by a mother who cared more for her son than herself. In God's humble ways a way will be found for all of you to meet "once" again. May God bless you always....

Be always safe,

Cryssa,

Can barely see for the love, the compassion, in these lines. Beautifully penned; well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Your son is doubly blessed: two Moms who love him! One, who birthed and raised him in his formative years; two, you, who continues to love and raise him as yours. What pain the birthmom must have gone through to give him to you.

This was so sweet, I had to try not to cry. If only she could read it, know of the understanding of another mother, now the mother of her child. I think it would mean the world to her if she only knew what you understood, and saw in her eyes. Even more than that, to know that she has not been forgotten, or pushed back, that she lives in him every day and we are grateful for her. A beautiful poem, truly from the heart...

Ahna
