The Color of Me

Paint me a sunset

Color me blue,

but please don’t use

any chartreuse!

I’m the blue of the sky

when its calm or it’s stormy,

and the purplish hue

of the mountain tops too.

I’m the cream of the wheat field

at the end of the summer;

the green of the crops

and the blue of rain drops.

I’m the brown of the earth

from my rich farmer’s roots,

and the white of the milk

from my dairyman’s boots.

I’m the white of a chicken

and the egg whites inside

that I gathered by dozens

until I turned five.

(okay, I was really 8, but it didn’t rhyme…hee, hee…)

I’m the red, white and blue

of America’s flag.

I’m the red, white and blue

of Haiti’s flag too.

I’m the clear of a crystal

which sparkles and shines.

I’m the color of water

which falls crystalline.

I’m the slate gray-blue skies

that you find in the fall,

and the orange of autumn

when the tree leaves all fall.

I’m the tan of my carpet,

the cream of my walls,

the green of my home,

and the calm of bird calls.

I’m a pale pink sunrise,

and a pale moon yellow,

the dark blue of night

with a hint of gold starlight.

I’m the pink of a rosebud.

I’m a light purple iris,

the blue of a larkspur,

the red of a rose.

I’m a white calla lily

or the peach rose of peace,

the white of a dove

that brings me to peace.

The colors I am

are subdued

and not flashy

(Unless I am in a bad mood…)

So, paint me the colors

of sunrise or sunset.

Add traces of shadows

and tints of fresh flowers.

You can shade me with tinges

of all of these colors,

but it’s the wings of a dove

and blue that defines me.
