Roadside Memories



Although I never knew you,
And will never know your name,
I feel sorrow when I pass through,
And a small amount of shame.

I wonder how it came to be,
That you ended up this way,
A painted cross, a Christmas tree,
So much heartache they convey.

I wonder, Were you young or old?
Were you a girl or a boy?
I imagine all the pain, untold,
From your still unopened toys.

Though, forever you are gone,
Here, the grief will always stay.
Like these flowers on the lawn,
Time froze that fateful day.
