Are you Okay?

This is one time I could not walk away and ignore what was happening...neither could my grandson.

Poem Artwork

Are you Okay?

I took my grandson to the park one sunny day,

And saw a man thrashing his son who didn’t want to obey.

There must be some other way to state his position.

Other than a sound whipping and showing his attrition.

It seemed to me the father did something really nice.

And took his son to the park where the equipment enticed.

But then undid the nice with something cruel & sad.

For the little boy was screaming, “Please stop it dad.”

The more the little boy yelled that harder he was hit.

Which made my stomach turn and I began feeling sick.

So I walked over and softly said, “Sir are you okay”?

The father looked embarrassed and said, “Go Away!”

But my 6 year old grandson looked shocked as he stood there.

“Don’t you like your little boy, he’s crying, don’t you care.”

“Did he break something expensive or did he say a nasty word?

“If he did, I’m sure he’s sorry and the bad word I never heard.”

I tried to leave, I really did, but my feet would not move.

I said again to the Father in a soft voice trying to soothe.

“Are you okay sir, I know children can really get to you?”

“But sometimes they get sidetracked and aren’t sure what to do.”

“They don’t mean to make us angry or get us so upset.”

“But they just don’t think like we do, at least none of those I have met.”

“I think your little guy learned his lesson and is sorry for what he’s done.”

“He has his daddy’s expressive eyes and you can tell he is your son.”

“I’m so sorry son; I didn’t mean to take all this out on you.”

“But I lost my job today; I had no idea what I was going to do.

“Please forgive me son, I didn’t want you or your Mommy to know.”

“I realize now we must pull together so we can flourish and grow.”

I've often seen mothers dealing harshly with their offspring. I suppose their cuteness wears off when you have to be their guardians 24/7. But recently I've seen a baby coughing while the mother blithely smokes her cigarettes in his face. Not a good idea!

How often have we seen displays like this in public and done nothing about it? Like Ed below says...when he did it ended okay but later the same man killed his wife and son....he could have done it that very day and perhaps taken Ed with him too! One never knows what will make someone snap...and although I love you for stepping in, and your grandson too...this was done with softness on your part, which may have kept the situation from escalating...however...I worry that it could have resulted in a horrible situation for all. How often I recall as a child that a confrontation would occur, police would show up...then leave...and things would be worse! This world is such that we are being placed in a position of not knowing whether to intercede or turn the other way?? This poem is very well done...and you are an angel who walks in our midst. Thank you, lindalaw

I doubt I could have been as forgiving and compassionate as you were, as in the same situation once before in my life, I found myself grabbing the guy and pulling him away from his son...the police came and it all ended well THAT night, but not long after the father killed his wife and son, then himself...as is our world, totally falling apart...ed

wow! -- your compassion for your fellow man is a thing of beauty -- you exerted your love over the man's out of control mood -- surely you will be blessed for that action Bonnie -- walk in the footsteps of peace and love my friend -- JMW

Dear Bonnie,
You really touched my heart with this poem Bonnie. We become our parents and the lessons that man is teaching by hitting his son will end up with that little boy hitting his own children. To me that is so sad. This poem will stay with me for a long time.
Hugs,
Marcia

Sometimes children deserve a butt whompin', but don't do it in public. Many people frown on it. Now, I'm all for it, but don't do it to excess. Some people just don't know when to quit; these are the ones who don't deserve to have children!

Powerful message in this; well done, Bonnie!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(

Bonnie,

Wonderfully written. It's sad, but when parents are frustrated they often take their anger out on their children. You've done a service today by reminding people of that.

Bonnie, this is sad and it makes one know people with problems should not take their worries on their children. I do believe this is what happens in a lot of cases. Good to call this to the attention of readers. Good job!
