Is It Someday Yet

When my brother and I were just knee high kids

Mama and Daddy took us on lots of trips.

Sometimes the ride seemed to take such a long, long while.

But Daddy’d say, “It’s only just a few more miles.”

He said, “Someday you’ll understand getting there is half the fun.”

And five seconds later I said, “Daddy, I’m bored.  Is it someday yet?”

I rode a horse for the very first time

On a sunny afternoon of the day I turned nine.

The ride seemed to end in such a short, short way.

But Daddy said, “There’ll be plenty more riding days.”

He said, “Someday you’ll understand having something to look forward to.”

And five days later I said, “Daddy, let’s go!  Is it someday yet?”

My high school sweetheart let me down

On the night a call came from the Sheriff downtown.

The ride home from jail was frozen in my mind. But Daddy said, “Baby Girl, I’m just glad you’re alright.”

He said, “Someday, you’ll understand there’s a reason behind the pain in God’s plan.”

And five months later I said, “Daddy, meet Tom.  Is it someday yet?”

On my wedding day I laughed and I cried.

We were both so amazed at the knot we’d just tied.

Our honeymoon ride seemed destined to soar in the sky.

And Daddy said, “I wish for you a fabulous loving life. But

Someday if you need me, you know you have a place to come.”

And five years later I said, “Daddy, he’s gone.  Is it someday yet?”

The day of Mama’s funeral was a dreary one.

The tears that we cried just drown in the new ones.

The ride home later was a long and silent scream.

And Daddy cried, “Please! Just let this be a bad dream!”

He said, “Someday I’ll understand, when your Mama and I are together again.”

And five seconds later he sobbed, “Father above!  Is it someday yet?”

Well, Mama and Daddy went on a long trip

And now I’m alone but I’ve a smile on my lips.

The ride of my life is waiting just ahead.

And I’ll always remember what my Daddy said.

He said, “Someday if you need me, you know you’ll have a place to come.

Someday you’ll understand there’s a reason behind the pain in God’s plan.

Someday.  Someday.  Someday.

Beautiful - someday seems to never get here - and when it does, we're never ready - well done.

Your father was a wise man and full of love and adoration for his family. Heed his words always and they will see you through anything that life can offer....

Be always safe,
Karen

What a poignant poem you have written, Kathy. So meaningful to you, but also to those who read. (sigh)

This is almost too beautiful for my meager words, especially as I wrestle with the passing of my own mom. It's a blessing to read it. Rebecca
