The homeless sleep rough at Christmas time wishing for a home of their own and from street to street then along the alleys the homeless people roam ,
until they come to the shelter where they beg for a bed and some bread .
But the man who runs the shelter there puts out his hand and shakes his head
Unless you’ve got a fiver of course which would get you in for the night .
The streets are a cold and merciless place where nothing is out of sight .
It was Christmas Eve down at the shelter and there wasn’t a bed to spare ,
So the few who knew of the penny rope system made there way over there .
It was called the penny rope because that’s how much it cost to buy a spot ,
On a rope tied across a room where you could hang all your weary lot .
On Christmas morning there’s a free cooked breakfast all for hungry men ,
With donations of clothes arriving constantly every now and then .
It’s Christmas in the shelter and there’s a party for everyone there .
Someone is selling raffle tickets and the first prize is a new home .
See the homeless smile and for a while Christmas is not so alone .
Its Christmas in the shelter and Santa arrived as everyone planned ,
With some gifts for all the residents there and a penny in the hand .
Hard times in these lines of compassion ... we often forget, we are but a pay cut, disaster, poor life choice away from where these people are: would we want someone to reach out to us? Definately. Well done.
So true of this season of the year. Many homeless some of their own accord, some were rejected by their families, and I suppose some have other reasons too. I feel them and know they are taken care of in homeless shelters but many decide to stay out on the street I am reading a book now entitled Whiskey island, it is a crime scene book too, but has about the homeless in it too. It is a terrific book to let you know people aren't always wanted by their families and do have problems and live on the street.
