Bones creak with each endless step
After a restless night of tears since wept
Friends removed from my world today
I long for nothing but the next tray
Nurses come and go at will
Ignore the bodies lying still
A form once vibrant, now racked with pain
Nothing ever stays the same
Only memories to keep me young
The old hymns now seldom sung
Alone I remain in this quiet tomb
With antiseptic smells in my hospital room
Never did I intend to stay
Beyond my 90th birthday
Pictures adorn my window sill
Of people and places when time stood still
White replaces the reds and blues
Distance and years separate people I knew
Give me strength to live out this day
Perhaps a visitor will come and stay
Tell me stories and give me hope
That life’s worth living if I could cope
The room darkens and suddenly I see
Family and friends together with me
Old age in a nursing home is told here, and I hope more visitors go see their elderly friends and relatives, I know I'd want company come see me, I'm 70, not yet ready but getting there.
Awesome writing. You really took me there, reminded me of nursing homes. Talked to many older people in them and you pretty much laid it out there. That is how a lot of older gentlemen and women feel, exactly actually, you nailed it. It's so sad but so true, "Perhaps a visitor will come and stay, Tell me stories and give me Hope".
Wonderful poem, although I prefer that the celebrant have breakfast with pals, drive to the golf course for a round before the big party that dances with great, great, great grandkids and lasts playing cards late into the night.
wonderful write; i hope i live THAT long! if God lets me, i will..i already have beaten the odds now; drs. thought I wouldn't live past my first day on Earth, but I fooled them...and nearly 46 years later, I am still kickin'! Hope I kick around for a long time to come! :)
