I saw you today bound in handcuffs
and shame -
I wondered about you -thou I knew
not your name.
A policeman by your side - your
freedom stripped away-
You don't know what to do -
You don't know what to say.
I wondered how you felt - not
being free -
I wondered how I would feel if
it were me.
A simple cup of coffee - the wind
on my face-
A scenic car drive - a thrilling
Nascar race.
Snatched by justice all have been
taken from you-
The simple joys of living - what did
you do ?
Was it worth the boundage - just
Wishing you could die?
Was it worth losing your family -
Was it worth the tears you cry?
Oh, You will yearn for a real home-
the feel of your wife's kiss-
A beauty of a blooming rose - all the
dances you will miss.
Freedom is a high price to pay for
whatever you have done-
Those bars are so cold behind you-
Hiding the sun.....
Authors Note: I have compassion for these men and women locked away...sometimes forgotten...in a hell all their own. I saw this man in a doctors office looking so lost, .people were looking away- trying not to notice him...and I wondered how that made him feel....

LINDA, I LIKED THAT. ALTHOUGH, I FEEL COMPASSION, THE SYSTEM ANGERS ME.I FEEL FOR THE INNOCENT, BUT FEEL THE GUILTY HAVE IT TOO EASY. THATS WHY WE HAVE REPEAT OFFENDERS.I HAVE A FRIEND THAT IS A REPEAT OFFENDER, AND IS INCARCERATED NOW.HE RECIEVES NO REHABILITATION. THIS PRISON HAS COMPUTORS, CABLE TV, A STORE TO BUY MORE THAN NECESSITIES SUCH AS MUSIC AND EQUIPMENT TO PLAY IT, A SNACK BAR, COKE AND SNACK MACHINES,ECT. THEY CAN ORDER ITEMS FROM THE OUTSIDE ON CREDIT. THEY THEN PESTER FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO PAY FOR THEM. VISITORS CAN ORDER PIZZA ECT. AND HAVE IT DELIVERED DURING VISITATION.ITS VERY EXPENSIVE TO HAVE A LOVED ONE BEHIND BARS. ALSO, THE COST OF A PHONE CALL FROM A PRISON IS EXTRAORDINARY HIGH.I SEE FAMILY AND FRIENDS AS VICTIMS ALSO.NOTE: THE PRISON I JUST DESCRIBED IS NO FEDERAL PRISON. MY FRIEND JUST GOT A NEW PAIR OF DENTURES. WHY CAN'T THE STATE GIVE ME FREE DENTURES, OR AT LEAST GET MY CHILD SUPPORT SO I CAN PAY FOR THEM. SIGNED: VICTIM
What propels some to choose wrong from right, so hard to know. Yes I feel, especially for the kid in that backseat, handcuffed, but there are rules and if they are broken, consequences. People cannot just do as they please...robberies,spousal abuse, rape, homicide, drug related charges. Many countries even deal with such crimes more harshly than we can imagine. Yet your point is well made, bars are lesson enough. Thank you,
Josie
Its funny how so many people put on blinders and dont care....so many cry out in various ways.... and we just turn our heads and walk away... how sad... how very sad. Great write!!!
The write was done well...and I enjoy your ability for compassion.

This comment is for both Linda Hill (my sweet lady) and Jason T. Ganey. This was written in prison. And is the inside life of a convict. This is what I felt. This is quite a different view of a convict than presented by my sweet special friend Linda Hill with her poem "Freedom Taken Away." There is also little resemblence to Jason T Ganey's poem, "The Prisoner." This is concrete and real in my inner world and totally insane. Can you look in and see me looking out at you? Few can. Bill P.S. Life inside is quite complex and unusual and
can't be boiled down to simplistic viewpoints. Never thnk we go around with our head between our legs. All have made mistakes. Some just mistakenly got caught. Others are repentant and work towards getting back into society. And others bounce in and out all their lives. But sometimes they reject your synpathy and want to make it back on their own and just be an invisible part of society again. I do hope some of you understand this journey.

You feel for others, but would they ever feel sadness for you? It doesn't matter does it? You are you, a fine person.

A touching write on your compassion for others. Very sad, very unfortunate and so very real. A great poem
Hi Linda,
Thank you for this piece!!!!! SOOOOOO MUCH!!!! Please, if you have the time, go to my site and read A Letter From My Brother!!! It will explain why, I need to send you a hug and thanks again for such a warming piece to me!!! And I am sure it will be to so many others!!! You may get some slack for this one, but there are some prisoners who are there, because they have drug problems or have done petty crimes. As the cliche' goes, No one knows the pain until you have walked it!!!!!!
Hugs,
Maria

Your sensitivity is what makes you such a fine writer.

In June, 2000, two college students — Amy Shute and Jason Burgeson — were approached by a group of men. Forced into the backseat and driven to a remote location, they were murdered in cold blood.
