A mama's fryin' chicken
A little girl playin' underfoot
Popcycle melting she's lickin'
Family on the front porch
Swapping little lies
Mama wipes her brow
Taking out the apple pies
Laughing little children
Playing on the swing
TV blaring in the living room
As the telephone rings

A mama's on her knees
She cries for her children
Yet no body sees
No food cooked on the stove
No money for a meal
Her babies cold and hungry
How empty she feels
Got laid off from her job
About a year ago
Eviction notice in the mail
Where will they go

A man stands by a grave
His wife buried this very day
Her life could not be saved
Flowers blowing in the wind
As tears flow down his face
He wished God had taken him
He'd gladly taken her place
How can he live without her
Survive the lonely years
Without her hand in his
He wipes away the tears
and a cry goes by in the night....
and we will sing it's praise

Surely the greatest fear of any man who loves his wife as half of himself. The feelings are deep in this work. The symbolic contrast of black/white culture and poverty with the American dream, by the simple use of cheap fried chicken and the all American apple pie, is stunning.
